(a few of) My Favorite Things

  1. Laughter

Laughing at yourself is the most fun, painless way to start improving. There's also something about laughter that makes it great to share. If you tell someone a fact, you are saying "I know more than you"; but if you tell them a joke, it is like sharing your tofutti cutie. So when I laugh at you, I am being as nice as I can be: sharing a joke that also lets you laugh at yourself.

  2. Heather

Cheesy. Sorry. She sometimes calls herself an invisible hippo and I don't have a scanner right now which is why I made this movie.

  3. My Friends+Family

    Luke even has a homepage.

My mother has this page put up by her admirers.

  4. Getting personal email.

  5. Talking about myself

    Here's the obligatory lame bio:

Born in Middlesex, MA, 1/19/74, named James Quinn. Mother Helen, father Daniel, sister Elizabeth (now called Bethica and married to Caroline Ayres). Moved to CA when I was 3, soon settling at the house at 10 Bear Paw, Portola Valley (south of SF). When my girlfriends realized in 1st grade that boys are gross, stayed a stubborn loner until age 11. Then, I got pseudotumor cerebri, and the headaches made me lie down for 3 years. That solo introspection made me a serious procrastinator, but also self-aware enough to make friends when surgery enabled me to enter the friendly environment of Lick-Wilmerding High School. Showed off my brains and got away with murder there for 4 years before getting into (and blindly going) to Harvard. A year there convinced me that I didn't know what I was doing, but I didn't like it. Dropped out, went back to SF, and stayed for 2.5 years. Maintained a relationship; worked at Xerox Xsoft, then Noesis, then Fritz Incorporated; and went through psychoanalysis. Got bored, went to Oberlin, decided to major in Cognitive Science. Went to France summer 96 and to Mexico summer 97. Met Heather in Mexico. This biography is incomplete.

  6. My school
    Oberlin, the Ivory Tower

I know, everyone here is supposed to be bitter and disillusioned. And on a good day, I can be cynical with the best of them. But I like this place - especially after comparing it to UW where heather goes. Also, I had this cool graphic for it from a previous version of these pages, and I couldn't let copyright violation like that go to waste.
